Alabama has handed its starting quarterback job to Keelon Russell for the Sept. 5 opener against East Carolina, choosing the former third-string freshman over Austin Mack and putting a quarterback with 37 career snaps in charge of a playoff contender.
Russell appeared in two games as a true freshman, against Louisiana-Monroe and Eastern Illinois. Mack spent last season as the primary backup to Ty Simpson, who became a first-round pick. Russell’s first start is scheduled for noon ET at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
That choice puts Alabama’s projected playoff season on an inexperienced quarterback. Josh Pate’s preseason bracket has the Crimson Tide as the No. 10 playoff team, making Russell’s promotion a direct test of that projection before Alabama reaches its first SEC game at Kentucky on Sept. 12.

Alabama finished 2025 at 11-4 overall and 7-1 in SEC play. The Crimson Tide opened 2026 ranked No. 13 in the AP Top 25 and No. 11 in the coaches poll, carrying those expectations without the quarterback who led the team the previous season. Russell’s first start therefore comes against a nine-win team, followed one week later by Alabama’s trip to Kentucky and then a Sept. 19 home game against Florida State. The decision could determine whether Alabama stays on its projected playoff path or spends the season trying to steady its most important position. The program chose Russell even though Mack had been the more experienced option in the room.

The notable part of Russell’s promotion is not just his recruiting background. It is the player he passed. Mack already had the No. 2 role behind Simpson, while Russell spent his freshman season third on the depth chart and saw action only twice.
Russell’s high-school production helps explain the appeal. At Duncanville High School in Texas, he threw for 7,444 yards and 97 touchdowns and completed 71.3% of his passes.
Alabama has not said how Russell separated from Mack or supplied statistics from Russell’s two college appearances. The available record, then, is a sharp contrast: a prolific high-school quarterback with almost no college work, selected over a proven backup after a contested competition.

Mack is the obvious alternative because he was Simpson’s primary backup and the other finalist for the job. Alabama has not announced the rest of its quarterback order, so the program has not confirmed Mack as the No. 2 quarterback. His role still frames the decision. Alabama did not simply replace Simpson with the player who had waited behind him. It chose Russell, betting on what he could become rather than preserving the room’s previous order.
