The Pate State · Editorial IllustrationAlabama coach Kalen DeBoer said Monday, Aug. 31, that the Crimson Tide had not selected captains and would use a unity council as a player-coach liaison, while naming Alex Asparuhov its punter for Saturday’s opener against East Carolina.
“We have not selected captains yet, which is why they haven’t been announced,” DeBoer said. “We’ll kind of decide that here as we go through.”
DeBoer said fewer players had experience in the program, prompting him to form the unity council later than usual. The arrangement gives Alabama a leadership channel before it opens against a 9-4 East Carolina team, while Asparuhov’s selection settles one special-teams decision for a Crimson Tide team that went 11-4 in 2025.
Alabama hosts East Carolina at noon ET Saturday, Sept. 5. DeBoer said Alabama began practicing its game plan during the week of Aug. 24. The program has not said whether Asparuhov will handle every punt this season. The punter is settled for the opener; Alabama’s captains are not.

The captain delay pushes Alabama’s leadership decision into the schedule. The Tide plays four consecutive Saturdays from East Carolina on Sept. 5 through South Carolina on Sept. 26, and the Sept. 12 trip to Kentucky comes one week after the opener. DeBoer gave no announcement date on Aug. 31, leaving game performance as potential evidence before permanent titles are assigned.
The opener also carries less margin than the labels suggest. Alabama went 11-4; East Carolina went 9-4, a gap of two wins. For a Tide team ranked No. 13 by the AP, Sept. 5 can reveal whether the delayed captaincy reflects patience or an unsettled hierarchy.

The first captain announcement will show whether the unity council was a temporary bridge or the pool from which formal leaders emerged. The timing is as important as the names: Alabama goes to Kentucky on Sept. 12 and hosts Florida State on Sept. 19. A selection around either game would show how quickly game performance reshaped the hierarchy.
