The University of Arkansas board commissioned a review Friday, Sept. 18, of the school’s competitiveness in athletics and the resources available to football, one day before the 1-1 Razorbacks hosted No. 2 Georgia.
The review follows a 2-10 season in 2025 that included an 0-8 SEC record. Arkansas opened this season with a 31-14 win over North Alabama on Sept. 5, then lost 43-10 at Utah on Sept. 12.
The review could lead Arkansas to invest more in football while increasing pressure on the program to reverse its SEC decline. It also puts the school’s approach to competing in the conference under examination, not just its game results.
The board has not identified the review team, its scope, methodology, timetable or cost. It also has not announced any recommendations or specific changes to football resources. Arkansas hosts Tulsa on Sept. 26.
For now, the board has commissioned an examination of what Arkansas needs to compete, but no football change has been announced.

The review’s practical value may turn less on what it recommends than on when the board receives it. Arkansas’ first four October games are all in the SEC: at Texas A&M on Oct. 3, Tennessee on Oct. 10, at Vanderbilt on Oct. 17 and Missouri on Oct. 31. That sequence follows the Sept. 19 Georgia game and Sept. 26 Tulsa game, compressing the program’s conference test into five league opponents across six scheduled games.
That calendar creates two different scorecards. The football staff will be judged against a 2025 team that went 0-8 in the SEC, while the board’s review can be judged only when its team, scope and completion date become known. A process that extends beyond October would leave the season’s defining conference run to expose resource gaps before the board has identified any remedy.

When will the board put a completion date on the review?
The timetable determines whether the work can shape decisions during the 2026 season, including any larger football investment, or becomes an evaluation made after Arkansas has played its concentrated SEC stretch. The clearest tell will be a board announcement naming the review team, its scope and a deadline. Without those markers, the Oct. 3 trip to Texas A&M through the Oct. 31 Missouri game will produce four conference results but no public measure of whether the review is moving alongside them.
