Asa Montgomery schedules North Carolina official visit

What Happened

Asa Montgomery will take an official visit to North Carolina the weekend of Sept. 25, giving the Tar Heels one of eight visits planned for the fall. The 6-foot-7 forward from Powder Springs, Georgia, received a scholarship offer from North Carolina on July 17. His other scheduled visits are LSU on Aug. 28, Florida on Sept. 4, UConn on Sept. 11, Providence on Sept. 18, Duke on Oct. 2, Arizona on Oct. 16, and Louisville on Oct. 30. Montgomery is ranked No. 16 in the 2027 class by Rivals. No North Carolina statement was included.

Why It Matters

• North Carolina gets an in-person recruiting opportunity with a 6-foot-7 forward who averaged 24.1 points and 7.0 rebounds in EYCL play.
• Montgomery’s eight-visit schedule creates a crowded race, so Chapel Hill’s visit must compete with seven other programs before he makes a decision.

THE PATE STATE READ

Montgomery deserves credit for building a serious fall schedule after rising to No. 16 in the 2027 rankings and contributing to Team USA’s U17 World Cup gold medal. The task for North Carolina is bigger than getting him on campus. The Tar Heels have to show how their staff would use a 6-foot-7 scorer who also averaged 1.3 blocks and 1.3 steals. This moves UNC into the visit phase, not the finish line. The Sept. 25 weekend is the first test of that pitch.(Josh has not yet commented.)
