Byrum Brown Named to Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Watchlist

What Happened

Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown was named to the 27-player Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award preseason watchlist on August 19, 2026. The award recognizes an upperclassman quarterback for performance, character, leadership, and scholastic achievement. Brown was the only college quarterback last season to pass for more than 3,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 yards. He produced those numbers at USF before joining Auburn as a senior. The watchlist also includes LSU’s Sam Leavitt, Texas’ Arch Manning, Georgia’s Gunner Stockton, Oklahoma’s John Mateer, and Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed. Auburn’s official announcement did not include additional comment.

Brown isn’t walking into a new offense with a new group of targets; Auburn keeps the head coach, offensive coordinator, and four of his top five receivers from his USF season. That helps with timing. The hard part is the jump in defensive quality the schedule presents. Brown’s 3,000-yard passing and 1,000-yard rushing split earned this recognition, but the award case now depends on carrying both parts of that workload against SEC defenses.
