The Sept. 5 broadcast will feature Week 1 and national championship picks before a 7:30 p.m. ET matchup between two teams coming off 7-6 seasons.

The Pate State · Editorial IllustrationESPN announced that College GameDay would broadcast live from Baton Rouge before Clemson’s visit to LSU on Saturday, Sept. 5, making the opener the setting for the show’s 500th road broadcast.
The show will run from 9 a.m. to noon ET with Week 1 predictions and national championship picks before the 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff. The milestone comes in GameDay’s 40th season. LSU entered 2026 ranked No. 11 in the AP Top 25 and No. 13 in the coaches poll; Clemson was No. 23 in the coaches poll. Both teams went 7-6 in 2025.
Josh Pate’s preseason bracket placed Clemson as the No. 3 seed and LSU at No. 8, making the opener a direct test of both playoff calls. The winner can claim an early résumé-building victory, while the loser starts the season with a damaging setback.
Baton Rouge appeared to win out on a strong Saturday slate as much as on LSU’s SEC profile. Other candidates included Boise State at Oregon and Washington State at Washington.
GameDay has announced Ohio State at Texas for Saturday, Sept. 12, and LSU at Ole Miss for Saturday, Sept. 19. The hosts and analysts in Baton Rouge, the set location and the show’s LSU-Clemson pick have not been announced.
For Clemson and LSU, the 7:30 p.m. result will be the first major entry in an early playoff case.

The milestone starts an unusual concentration on LSU: among the first three announced GameDay stops, the Tigers appear twice. ESPN goes to Ohio State-Texas on Sept. 12, then follows LSU to Ole Miss on Sept. 19, exactly two weeks after Baton Rouge. No other team is listed at more than one of those stops.
That sequence gives LSU two national-showcase dates before it hosts Texas A&M on Sept. 26. Clemson’s path diverges after the opener: Georgia Southern and North Carolina visit before a Sept. 25 trip to California, followed by Miami on Oct. 3. One result launches two different September evaluations, but LSU already has a second GameDay stage booked.
