On Saturday, Sept. 5, in Tempe, Arizona, Arizona State opened 2026 with a 70–7 win over Morgan State as transfer quarterback Cutter Boley threw six touchdown passes in his debut replacing Sam Leavitt.
Boley completed 21 of 27 passes for 387 yards and played one series in the third quarter. He threw two touchdown passes each to Reed Harris and Grayson Rigdon, and one each to Omarion Miller and AJ Ia, as Arizona State piled up 688 yards.
“I think that they showed that they put in a lot of work this offseason. But we’ve got an unbelievable challenge ahead of us,” coach Kenny Dillingham said.
Arizona State led 49–7 at halftime and held Morgan State to 188 total yards. The Sun Devils scored on Kyson Brown’s 46-yard run on their second play, recovered an onside kick and scored again five plays later on Boley’s 10-yard pass to Miller.
The margin became so wide that the coaches mutually shortened the fourth quarter to 10 minutes. Dillingham said Morgan State coach Damon Wilson made the request through the officials.
“The referees came over and said, (Morgan State coach Damon Wilson) asked if we could shorten the quarter, and I said, yeah, of course, whatever he wants, we will do. And I’ve never been a part of a game like that. I didn’t know that was legal,” Dillingham said.
Morgan State received $600,000 for traveling from Baltimore to Tempe. Boley’s first Arizona State performance was emphatic; Texas A&M is where the transition gets its first real test.
“It was awesome how the fan base showed out. It’s just a lot of credit to the guys on the team for how we played tonight and how bought in they were all week to the game plan,” Boley said.

That challenge comes Saturday, Sept. 12, at Texas A&M. The game tests whether Boley’s debut can support a quarterback-led push beyond Arizona State’s 8–5 season in 2025 or whether the Sun Devils simply overwhelmed an FCS opponent. Arizona State has not announced whether Boley will start in College Station.
