Before Tennessee hosts No. 1 Texas on Saturday, Sept. 26, Faizon Brandon’s father revealed how he steered the quarterback to camps where the best prospects in his class—and the class above it—were competing.
Lenard “Fatz” Brandon monitored social media for those camps and signed up his son, creating repeated head-to-head auditions instead of isolated workouts. Tennessee became the first SEC school to offer Brandon after its June 2023 camp, where he competed alongside five-star Jared Curtis and four-star George MacIntyre.
“I had one trick up my sleeve, and I didn't let my wife and (Faizon) know,” Lenard Brandon said in an August interview. “I would look on social media to see the camps that the top (quarterbacks) were going to — the guys in Faizon's class and the class above him. And those were the camps that we went to.”
The plan put Brandon in the same drills as quarterbacks who already carried national reputations. His father explained the standard he wanted his son to meet.
“But if there was a five-star guy (at a camp) and he had a name for himself, then we went there to see where you stand,” Lenard Brandon said.

Tennessee takes a 3-0 record into Neyland Stadium against a Texas team that also is 3-0. The Vols were No. 14 in the preseason AP poll and No. 13 in the coaches poll; Texas was No. 1 in both. Tennessee’s unbeaten start and its standing against the top-ranked team in the country are at stake Saturday at noon ET. The game also directly tests Josh Pate’s preseason bracket, which placed Texas fifth in the playoff field. A strong Tennessee showing would strengthen the Vols’ path; a loss would expose the gap between an unbeaten start and the country’s No. 1 team. The matchup also brings Brandon’s recruiting story into view. Tennessee’s evaluation of him came from seeing him compete against highly regarded quarterbacks, while Arch Manning followed a more private path before becoming Texas’ quarterback.

The camps were not simply showcases. They gave coaches and analysts repeated chances to compare Brandon with elite quarterbacks in the same setting.
At Tennessee’s June 2023 camp, Brandon worked alongside Curtis and MacIntyre. Curtis later signed with Vanderbilt, and MacIntyre became Brandon’s backup at Tennessee. At a Florida State camp in 2024, Brandon competed with five-star Dia Bell and four-star Jaden O’Neal. Bell signed with Texas and will be on the sideline for the Tennessee game; O’Neal signed with Florida State.
Brandon also repeatedly competed with Keisean Henderson, who signed with Houston after being regarded as the top quarterback in the 2026 class. By his 17th birthday, Brandon had faced every top-10 quarterback in his class, most of them more than once.
The exposure carried recruiting consequences. Brandon earned invitations to elite national combines after competing at regional camps, including Elite 11, Under Armour Future 50, the National Navy Combine and Nike’s “The Next Ones” Combine. Coaches and recruiting analysts saw him against the same level of competition that shaped their evaluations of other quarterbacks.
Josh Heupel said Wednesday that Tennessee’s in-person work with Brandon revealed details that film could not.
“Getting a chance to work with a quarterback in person, seeing their motion, how the ball jumps out of their hand, and their ability to take coaching points and incorporate it quickly, that's really important,” Heupel said.
That June 2023 workout helped Tennessee make Brandon its first SEC quarterback offer. The Vols had watched him compete, coached him and seen how he responded in the moment.

Lenard Brandon created a string of live auditions for his son, and Tennessee saw one of them on its own campus. That does not predict Brandon’s role against Texas, but it explains why the Vols gained conviction before offering him. The contrast with Manning is useful only to a point. Manning’s recruitment was more private; Brandon’s put him in front of coaches and evaluators beside the quarterbacks they were already tracking. The two paths meet Saturday, when Manning makes his first visit to Knoxville and Tennessee faces Texas in a game that can reshape the Vols’ playoff path. For Rolanda Brandon, the father’s secret plan now looks less strange. “Competition fuels Faizon. And he plays better against tougher competition, especially when it's older guys. So maybe there was a method to his (father's) madness,” she said.
