Gideon Lampron Gives Colorado a Defensive Anchor and a National Award Test
The Bowling Green transfer joins the Bednarik watch list after producing one of the nation’s rare 100-tackle, 15-tackle-for-loss seasons. His real test comes in a Colorado defense expected to replace every projected starter from last year through the transfer portal.

01 · The NewsWhat Happened
Colorado announced Friday that inside linebacker Gideon Lampron was named to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list. The award goes to the top defensive player in college football. Lampron is one of 91 players on this year’s list and the ninth Colorado player to receive the honor. It’s his second preseason national award watch list appearance after he was also named to the Butkus Award watch list. Lampron started all 12 games for Bowling Green last season. He finished with 119 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Colorado is expected to bring in all 11 projected defensive starters through the transfer portal, with Lampron projected to start at inside linebacker.
02 · The StakesWhy This One Matters
Lampron’s case starts with production that traveled beyond ordinary volume. He was the only player in the nation to finish the regular season with more than 100 tackles and 15 tackles for loss. That gives Colorado a linebacker who has already shown he can find the ball and disrupt plays behind the line. The award watch list is recognition, not a vote. Lampron still has to produce against a different level of competition and inside a defense being assembled almost entirely from new arrivals. His résumé at Bowling Green gives Colorado a starting point. It doesn’t give him the trophy.
03 · The Detail Beneath the HeadlineWhat Most People Are Missing
The bigger story is certainty. Colorado’s defense is being rebuilt with all 11 projected starters expected to come from the transfer portal. That creates a specific burden for Lampron. He isn’t just trying to repeat his Bowling Green numbers. He’s expected to help a new group function before it has played a snap together. Colorado coach Deion Sanders called Lampron a leader, playmaker and unselfish player who loves practice. Those traits matter more here because the defense needs communication as much as it needs tackles. The award buzz follows the role. It doesn’t create the role.
“It doesn’t prove that Colorado’s new defense will communicate, fit gaps or get lined up on time.”
The Wire Desk04 · The PersonnelWhat This Changes
Lampron gives Colorado a clear name around which to build its expectations at linebacker. That matters on a defense with a projected starting lineup made up of transfer additions. The coaching staff can point to a player who handled a full season of responsibility, started every game and produced 119 tackles with 17.5 tackles for loss. That’s more useful than a preseason label. It’s a recent body of work. The projection is that Lampron becomes one of the defense’s central leaders. The question is whether his production carries into a new scheme, a new room and a higher level of weekly competition. The award calendar gives the season a few checkpoints. Bednarik semifinalists are scheduled to be announced Nov. 10, finalists Nov. 24 and the winner Dec. 10. Those dates matter only if Lampron’s impact survives the rebuild around him.
05 · The ThesisThe Pate State Read
The watch list is the headline. The assignment is harder. Lampron has to be the steady piece on a defense with projected starters arriving from 11 different transfer paths. His Bowling Green season proves he can make plays. It doesn’t prove that Colorado’s new defense will communicate, fit gaps or get lined up on time. That’s the matchup Lampron faces every week. His individual production can remain strong while the unit around him struggles. The better outcome is more demanding. He becomes the linebacker who makes the new pieces play faster because he knows where everyone belongs. Colorado doesn’t need a preseason award candidate in isolation. It needs Lampron’s production and leadership to carry into the rebuilt defense. That’s the test.
06 · The Watch ListWhat We're Watching
Does Lampron become Colorado’s defensive voice?
Fall camp has already produced praise from Deion Sanders about Lampron’s leadership and preparation. The next meaningful evidence will be whether that role carries into game action with a new defensive lineup.
Does the production travel?
Lampron’s 119 tackles and 17.5 tackles for loss came at Bowling Green. Colorado needs to see the same impact against its new level of competition before the award discussion becomes more than preseason recognition.
Can Colorado’s new defense function around him?
The program is expected to bring in all 11 projected defensive starters through the transfer portal. Early communication and run-fit results will show whether Lampron’s individual talent is helping the unit or being asked to cover for it.
Does Lampron reach the Bednarik semifinal?
The semifinalists are scheduled for Nov. 10, followed by finalists on Nov. 24 and the winner on Dec. 10. Reaching the first cut would require his production to hold through the rebuilt defense’s early growing pains.
