No. 22 Iowa turned a 33–0 halftime lead into a 40–0 win over Northern Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 5, and Hank Brown emerged from the quarterback competition as the apparent favorite to start against Iowa State.

“Hank Brown is owed a huge apology,” a Yahoo Sports writer said after Brown outperformed Jeremy Hecklinski in the opener.

Hecklinski had drawn favorable reviews in Iowa’s open practices. Brown delivered the steadier game, while Hecklinski’s end-zone interception shifted the race. The available reporting does not include individual passing or rushing lines for either quarterback, so the clearest difference came from the moments that changed the opener.

Iowa’s defense and run game made the decision easier. The Hawkeyes recorded six sacks, held Northern Illinois without a first down for approximately 40 minutes and limited the Huskies to 0.2 yards per carry.

The offense repeatedly created open receivers. Tony Diaz made plays after the catch and nearly scored on a reception before being ruled out of bounds. Kamari Moulton reached a career high in yardage on six carries, Addison Ostrenga returned after an Achilles injury, and Evan James added a 77-yard punt return.

There were flaws. Iowa missed an extra point and a 52-yard field-goal attempt, although Caden Buhr converted from 45 and 34 yards. The Hawkeyes still finished with a 40-point margin and a 1–0 record.

The opener gave Iowa a result and a quarterback answer it did not have before Saturday. Brown now has to turn one steadier afternoon into the start against Iowa State.
