Virginia Tech went 2-6 in ACC play in 2025, part of a slide that has lasted more than a decade. Franklin’s charge is immediate: use the opening stretch to make the Hokies credible again before another season settles them in the conference’s middle and lower tier.
That stretch gives him VMI and Old Dominion at home, followed by a visit to Maryland on Saturday, Sept. 19. Virginia Tech then opens its ACC schedule at Boston College on Saturday, Sept. 26.
The job also takes Franklin closer to his family roots in Blacksburg. He has three games to make the change visible before the schedule gets harder.

The more revealing comparison is between Virginia Tech’s entire 2025 win total and the runway before conference play. The Hokies have three nonconference games before Boston College on Sept. 26, matching the three wins they managed across all of 2025. A sweep would equal last season’s output before the ACC opener; each early loss would consume part of the clearest opportunity to rise above that floor.
The schedule then compresses into Boston College, Pittsburgh on Friday, Oct. 2, California on Oct. 10, Georgia Tech on Oct. 17 and Clemson on Oct. 24. That is five ACC games on consecutive game dates, with three on the road. Clemson was No. 3 in Josh Pate’s preseason bracket, so the sequence finishes against a projected national-field team. The revival bid therefore gets two separate scorecards: whether Virginia Tech banks the opening opportunities and whether those gains survive the conference turn.

ESPN’s account does not give Franklin a win total or postseason target, leaving the schedule to supply the practical benchmark. Virginia Tech can first be measured against its three wins and two ACC wins from 2025, then against the five-game league stretch ending at Clemson on Oct. 24. That checkpoint also arrives after three road games in the five-game ACC sequence. The decisive tell will be the Hokies’ overall and conference records after that game.
