Javin Gordon’s status clouds Tennessee’s Arkansas backfield
The running back is questionable after totaling 97 yards from scrimmage in two appearances for the 4-1 Volunteers.
OCT 8, 2026

Tennessee running back Javin Gordon was listed as questionable for Saturday, Oct. 10, at Arkansas, a designation that could force the 4-1 Volunteers to adjust their running-back rotation in a conference road game.
Gordon has 79 rushing yards on 20 attempts and one reception for 18 yards in two appearances this season. He transferred to Tennessee from Tulane after the 2025 season, when he played in 14 games, including six starts, and ran for 516 yards and five touchdowns on 128 attempts.
Tennessee has not identified Gordon’s injury, said whether he will play or disclosed any workload restrictions. The Volunteers visit 2-3 Arkansas at 4:15 p.m. ET Saturday after losing 20-17 to Texas on Sept. 26. If Gordon cannot play, Tennessee will have less running-back depth while trying to avoid a second SEC loss.
01 · The Detail Beneath the HeadlineWhat Most People Are Missing
Gordon’s Tennessee rushing average of 4.0 yards per attempt is almost identical to his 2025 Tulane rate, but his role has narrowed from 128 carries across 14 games to 20 carries in two appearances. All 97 of his Tennessee scrimmage yards came against Furman and Georgia Tech; he did not appear in the ensuing three games. Tennessee went 2-1 in that stretch, with the three-point Texas loss between wins over Kennesaw State and Auburn.
Tennessee has therefore already shown it can function without him; the Arkansas designation now concerns restoring experienced depth for a compressed SEC run. The Oct. 10 trip to Arkansas opens three consecutive conference Saturdays, followed by Alabama on Oct. 17 and a trip to South Carolina on Oct. 24. Gordon’s 418 Tulane offensive snaps and 362 yards after contact are the strongest evidence that his value can exceed a 20-carry Tennessee sample. He also caught 13 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown at Tulane.
02 · The Open QuestionsQuestions to Be Answered
How large a role would Gordon have if he is cleared at Arkansas?
Tennessee has not disclosed any workload restrictions, and the game will provide the first usable answer through his snap count and touches. He had 20 carries and one reception across his two appearances, then did not appear in three straight games. A return on Oct. 10 would show whether the Volunteers are rebuilding a multi-back rotation for Alabama on Oct. 17 and South Carolina on Oct. 24 or merely making Gordon available. The opening series and first-half rotation should reveal more than the designation alone.
