Before LSU hosts Clemson on Saturday, Sept. 5, a Louisiana judge has blocked the NCAA and SEC from enforcing eligibility and transfer restrictions that could keep former professional players off the Tigers' roster. The ruling granted more than 40 athletes a fifth year of eligibility and opened a path for LSU to pursue at least three players who signed professional contracts.
The SEC has said it will follow the order, along with commissioner Greg Sankey. But league university executives are weighing a boycott against LSU, probation, expulsion or a federal legal challenge, according to a report by Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports.
“It's fair to say we are discussing multiple options, including that,” one league stakeholder told Dellenger when asked about expulsion. “Enough is enough. This is ridiculous.”
LSU's place in the SEC — and its playoff path as the No. 11 team in the preseason AP Top 25 — now hangs over a roster decision that could affect the Clemson opener and the Tigers' 2026 schedule. Josh Pate's preseason bracket places LSU as the No. 8 playoff seed, making a dispute that could disrupt either the roster or the schedule a direct threat to that pick.
The next concrete developments are an LSU roster announcement, eligibility determinations for Wright and Harris before Clemson, and any formal SEC sanction, legal filing or directive to member schools. The SEC also could pursue expulsion, but it has not announced that action.
“There are plenty of other schools that would take [LSU's] place,” a high-ranking SEC official told Dellenger.

LSU and coach Lane Kiffin are moving toward adding former Ole Miss tight end Dae'Quan Wright and defensive tackle Zxavian Harris. A third prospective addition has not been identified. Wright would address a tight end need, while Harris would add to the defensive tackle group. Neither player has been officially added or cleared for the Clemson game, and LSU has not said whether any of the three have signed with the program. The SEC bars players from joining after they sign professional contracts and also restricts intraconference moves outside the transfer-portal window. The Louisiana order prevents the NCAA and SEC from enforcing those rules against the athletes covered by the ruling. That gives LSU room to pursue the players, but it does not settle whether they can play Saturday or whether the conference can punish LSU for doing so.

The NCAA and SEC also have not said whether they will appeal. A federal challenge remains under consideration, but no such filing has been announced.
