LSU routed Clemson 51-10 on Saturday, Sept. 5, handing Dabo Swinney the worst loss of his Clemson tenure and immediately putting the Tigers’ playoff hopes and offensive plan under review.
Clemson entered the season in Josh Pate’s playoff field as the No. 3 seed. Against LSU, the Tigers managed 40 rushing yards and eight first downs, changed quarterbacks before halftime and watched both of Swinney’s major offensive bets — rehiring Chad Morris and declining to add a transfer quarterback — fail in the same opener.
Swinney defended the decision to bring Morris back with a forecast of what the offense could become.
“I’m really excited for our players. It’s pretty cool to have guys like DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins and a bunch of great players shooting me text messages with their excitement knowing what’s to come offensively. I think we’ve got elite offensive personnel, and the name of the game is points,” Swinney said.
The offense scored 10 points. Christopher Vizzina threw for 83 yards on 16 attempts and an interception before Tait Reynolds replaced him. Reynolds completed 4 of 6 passes for 22 yards and finished with minus-nine rushing yards.

The defeat also revived questions about Swinney’s future. It is not known whether Clemson will make a coaching change, alter Morris’ role or pursue another quarterback. CBS Sports reported that Swinney would be owed $57 million in buyout money if Clemson moved on during the 2026 season.

The quarterback change was the most visible problem, but the numbers pointed to a larger offensive failure. Clemson had 40 rushing yards against 38 first downs for LSU, and neither quarterback reached 100 passing yards.
That exposed two separate choices at once. Swinney hired Morris to run the offense, then chose not to add a transfer quarterback to compete with Vizzina. Clemson had no functional answer when LSU’s defense took control, leaving the staff to solve both the scheme question and the quarterback question with the roster already in place.
One game cannot settle a coaching tenure, and LSU may prove strong enough to overwhelm other opponents. A 41-point loss, however, gives Swinney little cover for the decisions that shaped this offense.

Clemson has not identified its starter against Georgia Southern, which visits on Saturday, Sept. 12. Vizzina’s 83-yard performance and Reynolds’ 22-yard showing leave Swinney with an immediate choice before the Tigers’ second game. The decision will also define the message around Morris’ offense. Clemson can treat the switch as an interruption during a rout or make a broader change after an opener in which the Tigers produced eight first downs.

Swinney can settle the quarterback order and reshape the offense around the player taking the first snap. He cannot undo the decision not to add a transfer quarterback, and the opener offered no evidence that the current plan can withstand an elite defense without a sharp correction. The staff question is just as direct. Morris was Swinney’s chosen answer at offensive coordinator, and LSU made that choice look untenable for one night. Clemson has not said whether Swinney will change course on Morris or the larger quarterback plan.

Pate’s preseason bracket placed Clemson third and LSU eighth. LSU’s 51-10 win was a direct hit to that projection, but the larger damage landed on Clemson’s margin for error. The Tigers now need a response against Georgia Southern before the season’s biggest questions grow louder. Swinney’s two national championships give him a long record to point to. The opening loss gave everyone else a new set of numbers: 40 rushing yards, eight first downs, two quarterbacks and a 41-point deficit. The Georgia Southern box score should answer three basic questions: which quarterback starts, whether Clemson improves on 40 rushing yards and whether Morris’ offense can move well beyond eight first downs. Those numbers will not erase Baton Rouge. They will tell Swinney how much of his plan he is willing to change.
