On Friday, Sept. 4, No. 7 Miami opened the 2026 season with a 45-6 win at Stanford, pairing five touchdown passes from debuting quarterback Darian Mensah with a school-record 234 receiving yards from Malachi Toney.
The Hurricanes got immediate answers to the two biggest questions around their passing game: who would drive it and which target would command it. Mensah threw five touchdown passes in his Miami debut, while Toney delivered the biggest receiving day in program history.
Miami came off a 13-3 season, including a 6-2 ACC record. Stanford finished 4-8 and 3-5 in conference play in 2025, then opened this season with a 37-27 win over Hawai’i on Aug. 29 before Miami held the Cardinal to six points in Stanford’s second game. The 39-point road win answered the first question on Miami’s schedule, though the available numbers do not include Mensah’s passing-yard or interception totals, or Toney’s receptions and touchdowns.
Josh Pate’s preseason bracket placed Miami in the playoff field at No. 11. The Stanford result supports that projection and gives the Hurricanes room to climb, while leaving the strength of the Mensah-Toney connection against stronger opponents untested.
Miami hosts Florida A&M on Thursday, Sept. 10. Clemson and Florida State are the more revealing ACC checkpoints, but the opening night already gave the Hurricanes a quarterback and a featured target who looked ready to carry the offense: Mensah throwing the touchdowns, Toney setting the record.
