No. 7 Miami turned its 2026 opener into an early statement Friday, Sept. 4, routing Stanford 45-6 and putting its ACC and College Football Playoff expectations behind a fast start.
Mensah threw five touchdown passes, three to Toney, as Miami built a 42-6 lead by midway through the third quarter. The connection appeared on the first offensive snap: Toney caught a pass from Mensah and turned it into a 48-yard gain, then scored on receptions of 23, two and 47 yards.
The Hurricanes did not rely on the first big play. After a 77-yard opening touchdown drive, Miami scored on drives of 75, 89 and 75 yards. Charmar Brown finished the 89-yard possession with a five-yard touchdown run, and Cooper Barkate caught a 34-yard touchdown pass on Miami’s opening drive of the second half.
Miami led 28-6 at halftime. Stanford’s points came on field goals of 30 and 24 yards, while Jake Weinberg’s 46-yard kick supplied Miami’s final points.
Josh Pate’s preseason bracket placed Miami at No. 11, four spots below the Hurricanes’ poll ranking. A 45-6 road win does not settle every question about the offense, but it makes that projection look light after one game.
Miami hosts Florida A&M on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 8 p.m. ET on ACC Network. Stanford travels to Duke on Saturday, Sept. 19. Mensah and Toney gave Miami the kind of immediate passing connection a playoff hopeful needs.

Miami entered the season after a 13-3 finish in 2025 and ranked No. 7 in both major polls. The win removed the threat of an opening-game stumble and gave the Hurricanes an early foothold in the ACC and playoff races. Stanford fell to 1-1 and faces another difficult test at Duke.

The hidden advantage is calendar space to determine whether Stanford exposed a lasting offense or merely offered an accommodating debut. Stanford went 4-8 in 2025, and Miami gets Florida A&M on Sept. 10, Wake Forest on Sept. 18 and Central Michigan on Sept. 26 before visiting Clemson on Oct. 3.
That sequence gives Mensah and Toney three games between Stanford and Clemson. Miami’s four long touchdown drives covered 77, 75, 89 and 75 yards, showing more than reliance on one explosive play. Carrying that drive-to-drive production through Wake Forest would make the Clemson trip a stronger measure of the opener.

How much of Mensah’s opener will carry into the ACC schedule?
The first useful checkpoint is the Sept. 18 trip to Wake Forest, followed by Clemson on Oct. 3. Mensah’s five touchdown passes set the benchmark, but his passing yardage was not provided. Miami’s drive results and his target distribution against those ACC opponents will show whether the Stanford performance established the offense’s level.
