No. 21 Utah will open the 2026 season against Idaho at 9 p.m. ET Thursday, Sept. 3, beginning Morgan Scalley’s tenure as head coach after Kyle Whittingham left the Utes for Michigan.
The change ends one of the steadiest runs in the sport. Utah had only four head coaches in 37 years, while the average coaching tenure nationally was about 3½ years. Scalley, a Utah assistant since 2006, takes over a team that went 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the Big 12 in 2025 and finished No. 14 nationally.
Scalley’s debut has been years in the making. He grew up about 3 miles from Utah’s campus, played for the Utes and moved through the program as an administrative assistant, graduate assistant, position coach, recruiting coordinator, special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator. Utah formally named him coach-in-waiting before the 2024 season.
Whittingham left an imposing standard behind. He won a school-record 177 games, took Utah to two Rose Bowls and one Sugar Bowl, and led the program to 10 finishes in the national Top 25. His departure for Michigan followed a season in which Utah reached 11 wins, placing immediate weight on Scalley’s first year.

That leaves Utah with a ranked team and a new leader trying to preserve the program’s recent standard. The Utes hold the No. 21 spot in both the AP Top 25 and the AFCA Coaches Poll, but the Idaho game can create an easier first impression than the Big 12 schedule will. Utah won 11 games last season; Idaho went 4-8 in the FCS.

That is the central football question around Scalley’s debut. Quarterback and running-back continuity gives Utah returning production in the backfield, while the total turnover on the offensive line threatens to separate that production from the rest of the offense. The answer may not come against Idaho, but the line’s progress will shape how much of last season’s offense carries into conference play.

The transition also carries a useful contrast. Utah returns quarterbacks Devon Dampier and Byrd Ficklin, along with leading rusher Wayshawn Parker. Every starting offensive lineman from last season is gone. All five graduated, including two who went in the first round of the NFL draft. That loss gives the Idaho game a narrow purpose: it can show which players begin the season up front and whether the rebuilt group functions together, but a clean night against an overmatched FCS opponent cannot answer how the line will handle Big 12 defenses.
