North Carolina and TCU kick off their seasons against each other Saturday in Ireland, the 12th major college football game played there, and recent history says the loser should be nervous.
The Tar Heels arrive off a 4-8 season, 2-6 in the ACC. TCU finished 9-4, 5-4 in the Big 12. Since the Ireland series resumed in 2022, Nebraska, Navy and Florida State all lost there and followed it with a losing season. Combined, they went 17-33 after those games.
The longer trend is less brutal but still real. Teams that lost major college games in Ireland have combined for a 46-42 record, excluding Rutgers in 1989, and five of those ten finished with losing records. Kansas State was the exception in that group and the outlier in the recent one — the only team since 2022 to post a winning record after an Ireland loss, going 6-5 in a season that still finished 6-6 and out of a bowl.
The first major college game in Ireland came in 1988, when Boston College beat Army, 38-24. Saturday's loser joins a list that has not been kind to itself since.
