No. 3 Notre Dame was scheduled to host 2-3 Stanford for the Legends Trophy on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 3:30 p.m. ET on NBC, with the Irish’s 5-0 start and playoff path at stake.

Notre Dame entered ranked No. 3 after wins over Wisconsin, Rice, Michigan State, Purdue and North Carolina. Stanford was 2-3 overall and 1-3 in ACC play after its three losses — to Miami, Duke and Wake Forest — were decided by a combined 137-16 margin. A loss to the Cardinal would badly damage Notre Dame’s playoff résumé.

Josh Pate’s preseason bracket placed Notre Dame at No. 9 in the playoff field, making the Legends Trophy game part of the Irish’s path to support that projection.

Notre Dame led the all-time series 25-14 and had won six of the previous seven meetings by an average of 29.5 points. Stanford coach Tavita Pritchard was in his first season, while Marcus Freeman was in his fifth at Notre Dame.

The Irish were scheduled to play at BYU on Oct. 17. Freeman’s job against Stanford was simple: keep Notre Dame unbeaten.

01 · The Detail Beneath the HeadlineWhat Most People Are Missing

Notre Dame’s 29.5-point average margin in its six recent series victories is almost identical to its 29.4-point average margin through five games in 2026. The Irish have scored 206 points and allowed 59, and four victories came by at least 17 points. Stanford’s profile is more extreme: Its three losses came by 39, 28 and 54 points, while its two wins came by 10 and seven.

A close Oct. 10 game would break both teams’ established pattern. Notre Dame allowed a season-high 26 points at North Carolina on Oct. 3, then drew an opponent that scored 16 total points across its losses. The useful measure before the Oct. 17 trip to BYU is whether the Irish restore the separation they established over the first four games.

02 · The Open QuestionsQuestions to Be Answered

1

Can Stanford keep the Legends Trophy game competitive into the second half?

Stanford’s two victories show a narrow route: It beat Hawai'i by 10 and Georgia Tech by seven, but none of its three defeats was closer than 28 points. Notre Dame has not won by fewer than 11. The halftime and final margins will show whether the Cardinal changed that pattern or reached the Oct. 17 game against Elon with another lopsided loss, while Notre Dame’s final score sets the frame for its Oct. 17 game at BYU.
