Ole Miss beats LSU as Lane Kiffin returns to Oxford

The victory strengthened Ole Miss’ early playoff case. LSU, one of Josh Pate’s preseason playoff picks, lost valuable margin for error before hosting Texas A&M on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Kiffin called the return “really emotional” and said the night affected him differently than he expected.

“I just thought I'd probably be more in like the competitive mode, you know, and just kind of embrace it,” Kiffin said. “It was just a little bit, I don't know, sometimes you can't predict your emotions. Sometimes I don't act like it, but I'm a human, too.”

Vaught-Hemingway Stadium filled well before kickoff. The student section was full more than 90 minutes early, and few empty seats remained an hour before the game. Kiffin answered the reception with a jab: “The stadium's full an hour early. I guess I had to leave to get them to do that, so, you're welcome.”

03What Most People Are Missing Kiffin’s return supplied the noise, but Chambliss decided the game. The quarterback received a sixth season of eligibility and stayed at Ole Miss after Kiffin left, even though Kiffin believed he had a chance to bring him to LSU.

Chambliss scored the touchdown that put Ole Miss in position to win, and the defense finished the job on fourth down. The Rebels won with the quarterback Kiffin left behind and the line play that carried them through the night.

Kiffin also spoke about Oxford in personal terms after six years there, a period that included the deaths of both of his parents.

“Six years here, and a lot of things and a lot of life-changing experiences and a lot of really good people that helped me through some really hard times,” Kiffin said.
