Ole Miss defeats LSU and climbs to No. 4

01What Happened

Ole Miss survived LSU’s 17-point comeback Saturday, Sept. 19, winning 32–24 to reach 3–0 and climb four spots to No. 4 in the AP Top 25.

The Rebels did it without a rushing answer. LSU ran for 172 yards to Ole Miss’ 63, but Trinidad Chambliss threw for 363 yards and scored the winning touchdown on a 14-yard run with 6:14 remaining. A reworked secondary also kept LSU from completing a pass longer than 19 yards.

That combination gives Ole Miss a ranked SEC win, a stronger Heisman case for Chambliss and a legitimate playoff path. It also puts Pete Golding’s six-game start under sharper national scrutiny.

“Trinidad Chambliss might be the best quarterback in the country,” Andy Staples said.

Chambliss completed 33 of 48 passes for two touchdowns before his late run put Ole Miss ahead. JT Lindsey added the two-point conversion, and the Rebels held on after LSU tied the game at 24 with 11:21 remaining.

02Why This One Matters

Golding is 5–1 as a head coach and 4–1 against ranked teams, according to On3. Two of those ranked wins came when both teams were in the AP Top 10, including Saturday’s victory over LSU and his Sugar Bowl win over Georgia.

Ole Miss had won only twice in the previous 60 years in games matching two AP Top 10 teams. Golding coached both of those victories. The Rebels also received first-place AP votes for the first time since the 1964 preseason poll.

Kiffin’s LSU team entered the night with a chance to change the early story around his return to Oxford. Instead, LSU fell to 2–1, while Kiffin dropped to 13–26 against ranked opponents and one win in nine road games against Top 10 teams.

03What Most People Are Missing

Chambliss carried the offense, but the defense supplied the other half of the win.

After Louisville produced 12 explosive plays and Charlotte found too many openings in the secondary, Ole Miss changed the alignment on the back end. Edwin Joseph moved to cornerback, and Jaylon Braxton moved to safety. LSU still ran effectively, but it could not produce the long completion that would have turned its comeback into a second straight lead.

The adjustment mattered most after the Tigers erased the 17–0 deficit. Ole Miss gave up the rushing yards, then denied LSU the kind of downfield play that could have broken the game open. Chambliss handled the rest.

Through three games, Chambliss has completed 70 percent of his passes for 924 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions. His Heisman argument now includes a ranked SEC win in which he produced 363 passing yards and the deciding rushing touchdown despite the Rebels’ 109-yard disadvantage on the ground.

04What the Coaches Can Actually Change

Golding’s staff corrected the explosive-pass problem, but LSU exposed another one. Ole Miss must improve against the run without undoing the secondary change that held the Tigers’ longest completion to 19 yards.

That is the immediate football decision before the visit to No. 21 Florida on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 3:30 p.m. ET. LSU’s 172 rushing yards give opponents a clear way to test the Rebels, while Chambliss’ 48 attempts show what the offense may require when that test works.

Florida is the next ranked opponent on a résumé that now includes Louisville and LSU.

05The Pate State Read

Ole Miss did not simply replace Kiffin and keep the same story moving. Golding has won four ranked games in six contests as a head coach, and the Rebels have now beaten LSU while correcting a specific defensive problem from their first two games.

The rushing gap keeps the result from looking complete. So does the fact that the Golding-Kiffin comparison is still built on a small sample. But the decision in Oxford belonged to Golding’s team: when LSU tied the game, the quarterback and the adjusted secondary answered together.

06What to Watch Next

At Florida, the box score will make the next questions easy to check. Did the Rebels again allow a large rushing total? Did the longest completion stay near LSU’s 19-yard mark? And can the offense lower Chambliss’ burden after he attempted 48 passes against LSU?

JD PicKell does not expect the environment to change the quarterback. “Trinidad Chambliss, for whatever reason, is just immune to the environment he walks into. We saw it against LSU with how charged up that atmosphere was. We saw it in the playoff. This dude does not care where the game is, who you’re playing or what you’re doing. He’s going to get you. He is inevitable,” PicKell said.
