Penn State, riding a two-game losing streak into a home game with 5-1 USC, will try to steady its season Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Beaver Stadium.
The Nittany Lions are 3-2 after losses to Wisconsin, 24-20, on Sept. 26 and Northwestern, 34-13, on Oct. 2. USC has won five of six, including a 25-21 victory over Washington on Saturday, Oct. 3, after its 41-27 loss to Oregon.
A Penn State loss would drop the Nittany Lions to 3-3 and put their playoff path under real pressure. Josh Pate's preseason bracket placed Penn State No. 7 in the playoff field, making a home loss to the 5-1 Trojans a direct challenge to that projection.
Penn State plays at Michigan on Oct. 17, but USC is the immediate test: the Trojans arrive with the stronger record and recent momentum, while the Nittany Lions have home field and a slide to stop.
01 · The Detail Beneath the HeadlineWhat Most People Are Missing
The schedule gives Penn State less room to absorb the outcome than USC. The Nittany Lions go to Michigan on Oct. 17, seven days after facing the Trojans, while USC’s next listed game is Oct. 24 at Wisconsin. Penn State then has 14 days before hosting Purdue on Oct. 31, but the Michigan trip arrives first and could amplify whatever happens against USC.
USC’s advantage also extends beyond its five wins in six games. The Trojans went 9-4 overall and 7-2 in the Big Ten in 2025, while Penn State finished 7-6 and 3-6. Their 2026 records have widened that established conference gap rather than creating a sudden reversal. Penn State can interrupt that pattern at home, but another loss would carry a three-game slide into the quickest turnaround on its remaining listed schedule.
02 · The Open QuestionsQuestions to Be Answered
Which version of Penn State will USC get?
Penn State outscored Marshall, Temple and Buffalo 127-22 during its 3-0 opening, then was outscored 58-33 by Wisconsin and Northwestern. Its scoring average fell from 42.3 points in the first three games to 16.5 in the next two, while the average allowed rose from 7.3 to 29. The Oct. 10 scoreboard will show whether the early margin reflected a level Penn State can recover or a favorable opening block that did not carry into the harder portion of the schedule.
