Pitt has named quarterback Mason Heintschel, tackle Ryan Baer, linebacker Braylan Lovelace and safety Cruce Brookins its player-elected captains for the 2026 season.
Heintschel, a true sophomore, is believed to be Pitt’s first true sophomore captain of the modern era. He went 6-3 as Pitt’s starter in 2025 and finished 201-for-316 passing.
Baer enters his fifth season with Pitt after starting all 13 games in 2025. Lovelace became a full-time starter last season and recorded 80 tackles. Brookins started eight of 10 appearances, made 53 tackles and is expected to start at boundary safety in 2026.
