The SEC’s other 15 universities are exploring penalties, a federal lawsuit and even LSU’s removal from the conference after the Tigers signaled they would follow a Louisiana court order allowing former professionals another college season, with LSU set to host No. 3 Clemson on Saturday, Sept. 5.
No penalty has been imposed. But the options under discussion reach beyond LSU’s ability to add players: the school could face probation, exclusion from SEC championship competition or boycotts of its games. LSU’s eligibility for the conference championship — and potentially its place in the SEC — is now part of the fight.

LSU enters the season ranked No. 11 in the AP preseason poll and No. 13 in the AFCA Coaches poll after going 7-6 overall and 3-5 in SEC play in 2025. Josh Pate’s preseason bracket placed LSU as the No. 8 playoff seed, a projection that faces a direct threat if the dispute changes the Tigers’ roster or blocks them from SEC championship competition.

The deeper dispute is over whether the SEC can enforce one set of eligibility rules across all 16 schools. Conference officials fear that a local court order allowing LSU to bypass a league restriction could weaken the SEC’s power to enforce its rules against any member that finds a favorable legal venue.

The roster impact also remains unsettled. LSU has not identified a former professional it plans to sign. Jack Plyburn said he would return to LSU if Tampa Bay cut him, but after the Buccaneers released him, he signed with Kansas City and said he planned to remain in the NFL.

Section 4.1.2 of the SEC’s 48-page bylaws authorizes SEC presidents and chancellors to ban a school from championship competition and “impose any other penalty which they consider appropriate.” A federal challenge would bring questions about sovereign immunity under the Eleventh Amendment because every SEC member except Vanderbilt is a public university. The SEC is also considering boycotts, probation and removal from the conference, though the bylaws do not spell out a procedure for expelling a member.

Expulsion carries the biggest headline and the least defined path. The more immediate pressure points are probation, championship exclusion and other penalties under Section 4.1.2. No school has committed to boycotting an LSU game, and the SEC has not announced a lawsuit or sanction before Clemson arrives in Baton Rouge. The other schools are treating the dispute as larger than one roster. As another unnamed SEC source put it, “There are plenty of other schools that would take [LSU’s] place.”
