South Carolina opens SEC play Saturday, Sept. 19, against unbeaten Mississippi State, a 4:15 p.m. ET home game that follows two nonconference wins and precedes a Sept. 26 trip to Alabama.
Both teams are 2-0, but their schedules have not asked the same questions. South Carolina beat Kent State 57-0 on Sept. 5 and Towson 45-9 on Sept. 12. Mississippi State beat UL Monroe 62-13 before winning 38-13 at Minnesota.
Mississippi State is South Carolina’s first meaningful conference test after those two tune-ups. The Gamecocks finished 4-8 overall and 1-7 in the SEC in 2025, so they need a conference win before Alabama to show this start can lead to something better than another losing league season.
Saturday’s game gives South Carolina its first chance to turn a clean start into a statement against an SEC opponent.

The less obvious comparison is that Saturday matches teams that shared a 1-7 SEC record in 2025, even though Mississippi State finished one game better overall at 5-8. That narrows what South Carolina can establish: beating the Bulldogs would be a step beyond Kent State and Towson, but it would come against a program carrying the same conference record, not one that proved itself above South Carolina in SEC play. Mississippi State’s 38-13 win at Minnesota is the separator in the available evidence because it has already carried its unbeaten record on the road.
The calendar makes that distinction costly. Saturday begins a listed six-game SEC run through the Oct. 31 trip to Oklahoma, with Alabama on Sept. 26, Kentucky on Oct. 3, Florida on Oct. 10 and Tennessee on Oct. 24 in between. South Carolina earned one league win across all of 2025; getting one in game three would match that total before the Sept. 26 trip to Alabama.

South Carolina has outscored Kent State and Towson 102-9, while Mississippi State has outscored UL Monroe and Minnesota 100-26.
