South Carolina and Mississippi State bring matching 2-0 records into Saturday, Sept. 19, at 4:15 p.m. ET, the first SEC game for both after each finished 1-7 in conference play in 2025.
South Carolina opened with wins over Kent State, 57-0, and Towson, 45-9. Mississippi State beat UL Monroe, 62-13, and Minnesota, 38-13. The Gamecocks finished 4-8 overall last season; the Bulldogs finished 5-8.
The winner starts SEC play 1-0 before South Carolina visits Alabama and Mississippi State hosts Missouri on Sept. 26. After dominant starts against nonconference opponents, this is the first chance for either team to show it has moved beyond last season’s conference results.
The game gives both programs their first SEC record of 2026—and an early result to carry into the conference race.

The matching records hide a larger opportunity: either program can equal its entire 2025 SEC win total in its 2026 conference opener. South Carolina and Mississippi State each needed eight league games to finish 1-7 last season; one of them will reach one conference victory on Sept. 19, before September’s final Saturday.
The schedules make that head start more valuable than the raw 1-0 mark. South Carolina follows with the Sept. 26 trip to Alabama, the No. 10 team in Josh Pate’s preseason bracket, then plays Kentucky on Oct. 3 and visits Florida on Oct. 10. Mississippi State gets Missouri on Sept. 26 and Alabama on Oct. 3 before visiting LSU on Oct. 17. The winner gains room before those runs; the loser carries another SEC defeat into them.

Whose scoring pace survives the move into SEC play?
South Carolina has scored 102 points and allowed nine; Mississippi State has scored 100 and allowed 26. The offensive totals are nearly identical, while the points allowed are not. The Sept. 19 score and margin will show whether that separation survives the first conference opponent and which unbeaten start carries more substance into the Sept. 26 schedule.
Can the winner turn one SEC victory into a real September change?
South Carolina’s test would come at Alabama on Sept. 26; Mississippi State’s would come against Missouri that night.
