Sumrall gives Florida its first SEC win at Auburn

01What Happened

On Saturday, Sept. 19, Florida beat Auburn 44-39 at Jordan-Hare Stadium, giving Jon Sumrall his first SEC win as the Gators’ coach and pushing Florida to 3-0 after a 4-8 season in 2025.

Aaron Philo won his first road start and first start against a Power Four opponent. Baugh carried 26 times for 162 yards and three touchdowns, including a 53-yard score in the fourth quarter, as Florida built a 34-17 lead and held on after Auburn’s late comeback.

The win gives Florida an early foothold in the SEC race and raises a real question for Sumrall: Can he move a team that went 2-6 in conference play in 2025 back into contention? Auburn fell to 2-1 after going 1-7 in the SEC last season, leaving Alex Golesh with a different question about his rebuild.

Sumrall attached personal weight to his conference debut at Pat Dye Field.

“I watched those guys my whole life,” Sumrall said. “Bear Bryant died basically when I was born, but I've always idolized the great coaches in this state. For us to get our first SEC win with me as the head coach at Pat Dye Field, I can't tell you what that means to me personally. One of my most prized possessions is a picture I have in my office of Pat Dye and Bear Bryant hunting rabbits together in Moundville, Ala.”

02Why This One Matters

The offense supplied the difference. Philo opened the second half with a 37-yard completion to Vernell Brown III, and two plays later Baugh broke a 33-yard touchdown run for a 27-17 lead. On Florida’s next series, Philo faced third-and-11 and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Wilson. The Gators led 34-17.

Baugh finished the job early in the fourth quarter. On fourth-and-1 from Florida’s 47, he broke through for a 53-yard touchdown. His 162 yards and three scores gave Florida the rushing production to protect its lead while Philo handled his first major road assignment.

The result also revived a matchup between two programs trying to recover their former SEC standing. Florida and Auburn played annually from 1945 through 2002, but both arrived at Jordan-Hare coming off losing conference records. Florida left with the first meaningful win of the Sumrall era.

03What Most People Are Missing

The coaching-search history sharpened the matchup. Sumrall, who previously coached Tulane, was linked to the Auburn opening before the Tigers hired Golesh. Sumrall grew up in Huntsville, won conference championships at Troy and is married to an Auburn graduate.

Asked after the game about having interviewed for the Auburn job, Sumrall pushed back.

“Who said I interviewed (at Auburn)? What are you talking about? They didn't want me and I didn't want them,” Sumrall said.

Golesh also carried recent history against Florida. His USF team beat the Gators 18-16 in Gainesville in 2025, six weeks before Florida fired Billy Napier. At Auburn, Golesh watched Florida build a 17-point lead before the Tigers’ late response made the score close.

04What The Coaches Can Actually Change

Florida’s 16 penalties are the clearest correction. The Gators created enough explosive plays to absorb them against Auburn, but Ole Miss visits Gainesville on Saturday, Sept. 26, in Florida’s first test against the tougher part of its SEC schedule.

The fourth quarter offered another warning. Florida had control at 34-17, then allowed Auburn to score two late touchdowns. Baugh’s 53-yard run kept the Gators ahead, but the comeback exposed how quickly penalties and missed execution can turn a comfortable lead into a one-score game.

05The Pate State Read

Florida has opened 3-0 after going 4-8 in 2025, and its new quarterback won a road game against a Power Four opponent. Baugh’s production made the result possible; Philo’s third-down touchdown throw to Wilson made the lead hold.

That is a substantial start, not a finished turnaround. Sixteen penalties and Auburn’s fourth-quarter push leave Sumrall with a clear task before the Gators face more demanding SEC opponents: keep the offense’s aggression and remove the mistakes that gave Auburn a path back.

06What To Watch Next

Against Ole Miss, the box score should answer three questions: whether Florida’s penalty total drops sharply from 16, whether Baugh can keep producing explosive runs and whether Philo continues to convert third downs with the game tight.

Auburn hosts Vanderbilt on Saturday, Sept. 26, with Golesh trying to steady a team that fell from 2-0 to 2-1. Sumrall has a different problem now — proving the first SEC win was the beginning of Florida’s climb, not its high point.

When Sumrall weighed the Florida job, his wife, Ginny, gave him a direct answer: “You've got to take the Florida job.” On Saturday, Sept. 19, that advice produced his first SEC win as the Gators’ coach.
