Malachi Toney gave No. 7 Miami a record-setting start to its playoff push Friday, Sept. 4, catching 12 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns in a 45-6 win at Stanford.
The 234 receiving yards set a Miami single-game record. Toney’s three touchdowns accounted for half of the Hurricanes’ scoring total, and his 12 catches gave Miami an immediate featured weapon at receiver.
That makes Toney’s opener more than a strong debut. Miami entered the season ranked No. 7 in both the AP Top 25 and the AFCA Coaches Poll after finishing 13-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play in 2025. Toney’s production gives the Hurricanes a proven explosive target before those larger tests arrive.
Josh Pate’s preseason bracket placed Miami at No. 11 in the College Football Playoff field. The Stanford rout strengthens that projection early, while the October ACC stretch will put it under pressure.
Stanford, which finished 4-8 last season, is 1-1 after opening 2026 with a 37-27 win over Hawai’i. Miami’s next game is Thursday, Sept. 10, against Florida A&M at 8 p.m. ET.
For the Hurricanes, the opener supplied the kind of individual performance that can change how a season is covered. Toney put his name alone atop Miami’s receiving record book before the schedule reached its hardest stretch.
