Washington puts its preseason ranking on the line against Washington State in the season-opening Apple Cup on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 4 p.m. ET in Seattle, with the in-state rivalry airing on NBC.
The Huskies bring a 9-4 record from 2025 into the matchup, along with the No. 17 spot in the AP poll and No. 19 ranking in the coaches poll. Washington State finished 7-6 last season, including a 34-21 victory over Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
The listed passing numbers give Washington the clearest statistical edge at quarterback. Demond Williams Jr. threw for 3,065 yards and 25 touchdowns with eight interceptions while completing 69.5% of his passes. Zevi Eckhaus had 2,094 yards, 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions for Washington State, with a 62.9% completion rate.
That difference gives the Huskies more production to defend on paper: Williams had 971 more passing yards, 10 more touchdowns and four fewer interceptions than Eckhaus. It also puts the focus on whether Washington State can disrupt the quarterback who starts the game with the stronger listed line.
Washington State’s next listed game comes at Kansas State on Saturday, Sept. 12, at noon ET. Washington hosts Utah State that day at 3:30 p.m. ET, but the first result arrives in the Apple Cup, where the Huskies have the ranking and home field—and Washington State has the chance to change the season’s opening conversation.
