01 · The NewsWilliams’ Injury Forces Washington’s QB Choice

Washington’s quarterback question sharpened Friday when Demond Williams Jr. left near the end of the second quarter with a shoulder injury, and Iowa went on to beat the Huskies 41–24, dropping them to 3–3.

Williams did not return. Washington has not disclosed the injury’s severity or said whether Williams or Elijah Brown will start at Purdue on Friday, Oct. 16.

The injury also risked hiding how poorly Washington had played before Brown entered. The Huskies had 75 yards of total offense and three points when Williams left. They have opened with a three-and-out in five of six games, a pattern that has left little room for slow starts to resolve themselves.

Iowa exposed more than Washington’s quarterback uncertainty. The Hawkeyes ran for 263 yards and threw for 202, while Kamari Moulton produced a career-high 208 rushing yards on 26 carries and scored twice. His 56-yard touchdown run highlighted another breakdown in Washington’s tackling, and Iowa’s rushing success put the Huskies’ run blocking and physicality under the same pressure.

Iowa did it with Jeremy Hecklinski making his first career start. Washington, which finished 9–4 in 2025, has now lost three straight games after opening this season 3–0. The record has tightened the margin for error, but the Iowa loss made clear that the problem reaches beyond who takes the first snap.

Fisch must weigh Brown’s production against Williams’ status and decide whether the comeback changed the plan. Brown’s arm gave Washington a way back into the game; the Huskies still have to fix what put them behind.

02 · The StakesThe Stakes

Brown made the decision harder to avoid. He threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns in Washington’s attempted comeback, giving coach Jedd Fisch a genuine quarterback question before a game that could push the Huskies below .500 with another loss.

03 · The Watch ListWhat We're Watching

1

Who takes the first snap?

Washington has not said whether Williams or Brown will start at Purdue, leaving Williams’ status and Brown’s comeback production as the central check.

2

Can Washington avoid another slow start?

The Huskies have opened with a three-and-out in five of six games, and they had only 75 yards of total offense and three points when Williams left.
