Clemson’s 51-10 loss at No. 11 LSU on Saturday, Sept. 5, became the worst defeat of Dabo Swinney’s head-coaching career and pushed Christopher Vizzina aside for Tait Reynolds before halftime.

Afterward, Swinney took responsibility for the 41-point loss.

> “We got our asses kicked,” Swinney said. “We gotta go win next week. It’s an embarrassing performance, coaching and playing. We’re going to have to own that. We can’t let that lead to another loss.”

The preseason No. 23 Tigers fell to 0-1 after a 7-6 season that included a 4-4 ACC record. Clemson began with playoff aspirations, but it needs an immediate offensive response before conference play or risks another season without a winning ACC record and more scrutiny of Swinney’s program direction.

LSU entered ranked No. 11 in the AP Top 25 and No. 13 in the AFCA Coaches Poll, but both teams had finished 7-6 in 2025. Clemson’s problem was not simply losing a difficult road opener; LSU won the first-down battle 38-8, while Clemson managed 40 rushing yards.

Neither quarterback supplied an answer. Vizzina threw a pick-six and finished with 83 passing yards on 16 attempts. Reynolds completed 4 of 6 passes for 22 yards and lost nine yards rushing after taking over before halftime.

Swinney’s offseason decisions are already under pressure. He hired Chad Morris as offensive coordinator and did not bring in a transfer quarterback to compete with Vizzina.

Morris previously coached Clemson’s offense, but his later stops as Arkansas’ head coach and Auburn’s offensive coordinator ended unsuccessfully. Swinney described the reunion as an easy call.

> “There are always tough decisions that have to be made in this profession, and though I had to make a couple tough decisions, it was an easy decision to hire Chad Morris,” Swinney said. “I’m really excited for our players. It’s pretty cool to have guys like DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins and a bunch of great players shooting me text messages with their excitement knowing what’s to come offensively. I think we’ve got elite offensive personnel, and the name of the game is points.”

Clemson scored 10 points in Morris’ debut. The more damaging numbers were the 40 rushing yards, eight first downs and a quarterback change before halftime.

Reynolds’ appearance did not establish him as the answer. Clemson has not said whether Swinney will name a starter, change the offensive approach or make staff or personnel moves before Georgia Southern visits on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The decision cannot linger far into the season. North Carolina comes to Clemson on Sept. 19, followed by a Sept. 25 trip to California and Miami’s visit Oct. 3.

Clemson’s first decision is at quarterback: return to Vizzina, stay with Reynolds or use both. Morris also must respond to an opener in which the Tigers could not run the ball, move the chains or find dependable quarterback play.

The program has not announced its plan for either spot.

One loss to a ranked SEC opponent does not settle a season. But Clemson did not leave Baton Rouge with one late-game error to correct. Its first game under Morris exposed trouble across the offense, following deliberate offseason choices at coordinator and quarterback.

Clemson would owe Swinney $57 million if it moved on from him this season. For now, the immediate pressure falls on finding an offense that can function before the ACC stretch arrives.

The first snap: Does Vizzina or Reynolds open against Georgia Southern? The run game: Can Clemson improve on 40 rushing yards? The chains: Can the Tigers produce more than eight first downs? The offense: Does Clemson find a workable answer from either quarterback?

After one half at LSU, Clemson has no established quarterback answer.
