Illinois opens 2026 with Katin Houser, Bobby Hauck’s new defense

Illinois opens the 2026 season Thursday, Sept. 3, against UAB with a different set of pressure points than the group that finished 9-4 last fall.

Katin Houser will make his Illinois debut at quarterback after stops at Michigan State and East Carolina. Offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. put the assignment simply: “I just want him to be the quarterback. Just focus on the fundamentals.” Houser will do it behind a line with three new starters.

The other first look comes on defense. Bobby Hauck takes over after Aaron Henry’s departure and is installing a 3-3-5 system, part of a larger staff reset that includes new coordinators on both sides of the ball. Hauck spent much of the previous two decades as Montana’s head coach. Bielema said, “I think our defensive guys are having a lot of fun,” while also calling the defensive transition a “tremendous challenge.”

Illinois also enters Week 1 without a firm picture on two players. Jayshon Platt was injured at the start of fall camp and is expected to miss at least the first few weeks, though Illinois has not provided a final status for UAB. Bielema said Daniel Brown was not ready for Week 1; Brown played nine games and made two starts in 2025.

The opener begins at 9 p.m. ET. The useful early evidence will be whether Houser and the rebuilt front can settle the offense, and what Illinois’ new defense looks like when Hauck can call it against another jersey.
