Mark Mitchell’s challenge to the SEC’s intraconference-transfer rule is set for a Monday hearing in Louisville, leaving his potential move to Kentucky unresolved.
A temporary restraining order gave Mitchell access to the transfer portal, but the SEC rule still bars intraconference transfers outside designated portal windows. Kentucky could face a fine equal to half its sport’s annual budget, and its head coach could be suspended for half a season, for playing a violating athlete.
Former Kentucky coach John Calipari backed the league’s stance: “I like what the SEC is doing. If a player doesn’t like what the SEC is doing, what? Go to another league.”
