01 · The NewsMacIntyre Wins Debut, QB Job Stays Open

George MacIntyre won his first career start Saturday, Oct. 10, passing for 247 yards in Tennessee’s 24–17 victory at Arkansas and putting the Vols’ quarterback decision in front of their next game against Alabama.

The sophomore completed 18 of 29 passes for one touchdown and two interceptions. His 131.2 quarterback rating reflected a productive debut with enough mistakes to keep the evaluation unfinished.

MacIntyre, a Brentwood Academy product from Brentwood, Tennessee, became the first Tennessee native to start at quarterback for Tennessee since Jauan Jennings opened the South Carolina game on Oct. 26, 2019, as a wildcat quarterback. Joey Mathews was the last Tennessee native to open a game in a traditional quarterback role, against Southern Miss on Sept. 2, 2000.

Jim Maxwell was the last Nashville-area native to start for Tennessee in that traditional role, doing so against Arkansas in the 1971 Liberty Bowl.

The sources do not identify why MacIntyre made his first start or confirm whether he will start against Alabama. They do show a quarterback who won on the road and produced enough through the air to move Tennessee forward, while the two interceptions left Josh Heupel with a decision rather than a conclusion.

MacIntyre gave Tennessee a win in his debut. Alabama is the next answer to the question he opened.

02 · The StakesWhy It Matters

Tennessee improved to 5–1 and will host Alabama on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 3:30 p.m. ET. MacIntyre’s performance gives the Vols a starting-quarterback question to answer before one of their biggest remaining tests, with the job and Tennessee’s chance to stay in the SEC race tied to what he does next.

03 · The Detail Beneath the HeadlineWhat Most People Are Missing

Tennessee’s 5–1 start has put the Vols within three victories of their 8–5 finish in 2025, but MacIntyre’s debut came against an Arkansas team that fell to 2–4. The sharper comparison arrives Oct. 17 against Alabama, a team Josh Pate placed No. 10 in his preseason bracket. The seven-point road win preserved Tennessee’s trajectory without settling the quarterback job.

The calendar compresses Heupel’s call: Tennessee goes from Alabama to an Oct. 24 trip to South Carolina. His Alabama choice can establish the quarterback plan across consecutive SEC games, rather than function as a one-game response to Arkansas.

“Alabama is the next answer to the question he opened.”

04 · The Open QuestionsQuestions to Be Answered

1

Will George MacIntyre start against Alabama?

The answer will show whether 18 completions and 247 yards outweighed two interceptions in Heupel’s evaluation of the Arkansas start. Tennessee enters Oct. 17 at 5–1, then visits South Carolina on Oct. 24, so the choice can set the position for consecutive SEC games. The Alabama depth chart and Tennessee’s opening offensive series will provide the clearest tells.

05 · The Watch ListWhat We're Watching

1

Can MacIntyre cut down the mistakes?

The tell is whether the two interceptions from his debut remain a feature of his next start.

2

Does MacIntyre give Tennessee enough against Alabama?

Watch the passing production after his 247-yard debut and whether it moves Tennessee forward against one of its biggest remaining tests.
