01 · The NewsTexas Loses Its Margin

No. 1 Texas lost to Oklahoma 27-24 Saturday, Oct. 10, when Tate Sandell drilled a last-second 47-yard field goal, handing the Longhorns their first loss after wins over Ohio State and Tennessee.

Arch Manning’s fourth-quarter mistakes opened the door. He threw a pick-six early in the final period, then was intercepted again with less than a minute left. Oklahoma used the second takeaway to get Sandell into position for the winning kick.

Oklahoma, which entered unranked, became the eighth team outside the AP rankings since 2000 to defeat an AP No. 1 team. Texas had opened the season with a 24-23 win over Ohio State and a 20-17 victory at Tennessee before the upset.

The result also puts immediate pressure on Josh Pate’s preseason bracket, which placed Texas No. 5 in the playoff field despite the Longhorns holding the No. 1 spot in both major preseason polls. Texas’s updated AP ranking was not yet known after the game.

Steve Sarkisian has now been involved in three losses by an AP No. 1 team to an unranked opponent, according to Yahoo Sports. He was USC’s offensive coordinator when the Trojans lost to Stanford in 2007 and Oregon State in 2008.

Texas hosts Florida on Saturday, Oct. 17. Before that game, the issue is clear: Manning’s two late interceptions turned an unbeaten start into a season with no room for another result like this.

02 · The StakesThe Margin Is Gone

The loss leaves Texas with no margin for error in the SEC and College Football Playoff races. The Longhorns fell to 4-1, while Oklahoma revived its season at 3-2 and beat Texas for the first time since 2023.

03 · The Detail Beneath the HeadlineWhat Most People Are Missing

Texas’s unbeaten start concealed how little separated its biggest results. Against Ohio State, Tennessee and Oklahoma, the Longhorns scored 68 points and allowed 67, producing a 2-1 record with a one-point aggregate margin. The wins came by one and three points; the loss came by three. The late turnovers broke a pattern in Texas’s biggest games of surviving one-possession finishes.

Florida visits Saturday, Oct. 17, followed by Ole Miss on Oct. 24 and Mississippi State on Oct. 31, giving Texas three consecutive home dates to rebuild that vanished margin.

04 · The Open QuestionsQuestions to Be Answered

1

Can Arch Manning avoid another late turnover against Florida?

Texas’s games against Ohio State, Tennessee and Oklahoma were decided by one, three and three points, and Manning’s two fourth-quarter interceptions turned the latest close finish into the Longhorns’ first loss. The Oct. 17 Florida game supplies the next measure before Ole Miss arrives Oct. 24; Manning’s fourth-quarter turnover total will be the clearest tell.
